CALstore is a unique energy storage system based on the use of salt as a storage medium. This advanced system stores heat at high temperatures and offers a flexible, safe and sustainable solution for energy supply. Here we explain how it works in several steps.

Energy absorption

CALstore enables the efficient storage of surplus energy from various sources. Electricity from renewable, fluctuating energy sources such as wind or solar energy can be fed directly into the system. Thermal energy, such as excess heat from energy-intensive industrial plants, can also be temporarily stored in the CALstore.

Energy storage

CALstore stores the supplied energy in a well-insulated tank using a special salt mixture. When energy is supplied, the temperature of the salt rises above the melting point. This process ensures that the energy is stored efficiently and with minimal loss over long periods of time.

Energy output

CALstore is able to provide a thermal energy output of 500 kW over a period of up to 10 hours, whereby this output can be flexibly adjusted. In addition, as a hybrid system, CALstore can supply both heat and electricity and thus also serves as an emergency power generator to prevent blackouts.
